The School of Journalism and Mass Communications invites applications for a nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Environmental, Risk, or Science Communication with an expected start date of August 16, 2026. We seek a scholar-teacher whose program of research advances theory and practice in environmental, risk, and science communication, with strengths that complement our school and college. This position is also part of a Presidential-level cluster hiring initiative focused on water quality, environmental health, and disaster preparedness. The successful candidate will conduct original research, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, pursue external funding, mentor students, and engage in service to the school, college, university, and profession.

We welcome a wide range of expertise in environmental, risk, or science communication. Areas of interest include one or more of the following: media coverage and representation of science and environmental issues; communication in the context of hazards, weather events, risks, and uncertainty; science and environmental communication campaigns; information integrity and trust in public communication of science and environmental risk, including the role of digital platforms and social media; the use of artificial intelligence, data analytics, forecasting, or visualization to advance public understanding of science; strategic communication and public relations in science and environmental contexts; and innovative approaches such as immersive media, interactive platforms, visual storytelling for scientific uncertainty, or participatory models to support informed decision-making. We are especially interested in scholars whose work centers on water quality and communication related to water resources, with potential connections to environmental change, weather-related hazards, or disaster preparedness, in ways that support the university’s broader efforts in these areas.

The ideal candidate will enhance the school’s reputation in environmental, risk, and science communication through innovative research, high-quality teaching, and meaningful collaboration. 

Required Education and Experience

  • Ph.D. in Environmental, Risk, or Science Communication, Mass Communication, Communication Studies, Communication, Journalism, or a related field by the start date of employment. ABDs will be considered, with the Ph.D. required at the time of appointment.
  • An emerging record of scholarly publications or creative activity in environmental, risk, or science communication.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Evidence of, or strong potential for, excellence in teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Demonstrated potential for securing external research funding.

We welcome a wide range of expertise in health communication but prefer a focus in information integrity and trust in health communication, including the role of social media platforms. Areas of interest include one or more of the following: patient-provider communication in health contexts; health communication campaign design, implementation, and evaluation; digital health communication technologies such as mobile applications, wearable devices, and telehealth platforms; the role of artificial intelligence and data analytics in health information and media; information integrity and trust in health communication, including the role of social media platforms; media coverage and representation of health issues; strategic communication and public relations in health care; and innovative approaches such as immersive media, interactive platforms, or data visualization to advance health communication research and practice.

The library and information science profession is rapidly changing, and future information professionals will need expertise in data science, machine learning, and application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. The School of Information Science (iSchool) is expanding its faculty to address the growing need for information professionals trained to understand and apply AI technologies in various information organizations including libraries, museums, government organizations, and private corporations. Recognizing the transformative potential of AI to society and the significant impact on libraries and information organizations, the iSchool at the University of South Carolina invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant/Associate/Full Professor focused on AI related to library and information science to begin on August 16, 2026.

We seek scholars whose research, teaching, and impact in the field will advance one or more dimensions of AI in libraries and information organizations, including but not limited to:

  • Design: Conceptualizing, creating, and evaluating AI-based designs, such as innovative tools or curricula used in libraries, government, and other information organizations
  • Practice: Analyzing the potential and complexities of AI as it relates to libraries, librarianship, and teaching and learning.
  • Ethical and Societal Implications: Interrogating the ethical, historical, and cultural impacts of AI including considerations of privacy and bias.

The successful candidate will join a team of faculty and will be expected to: (1) establish/continue a strong and ongoing agenda for research; (2) teach in both face-to-face and online environments, primarily at the graduate level, with opportunities to teach in the undergraduate program; (3) develop courses focused on AI, especially AI and libraries; and (4) mentor graduate students.

Required Qualifications:   

  • D. in library and information studies or related field, plus relevant experience consistent with academic policy by the start date of employment (at least 5 years for Associate Professor rank or at least 9 years for Full Professor rank). ABDs will be considered, with the Ph.D. required at the time of appointment.
  • Evidence of a focused/established scholarly agenda (for assistant professor candidates, demonstrate the potential of building a scholarly agenda).
  • A record of research on AI (for assistant professor candidates, demonstrate the potential in this area), that explores design, practice, and ethical/societal implications of AI.
  • Evidence/potential to develop extramural funding. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to interdisciplinary research.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to teach online courses at graduate level.
  • Ability to advise graduate students at the Master’s and Doctoral levels.
